Dollar coins were first minted in the United States in 1794. The term silver dollar is often used for any white metal coin issued by the United States with a face value of one dollar, regardless of whether it contains that metal. Today, as then, quarters and dimes are made of an alloy consisting of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel.
