A Fascinating Glimpse into the Past This historical 1875 nautical chart, part of NOAA's online collection, depicts Hell Gate, a narrow channel on the East River, at the confluence of the Harlem River, which connects Long Island Sound with New York Harbor. The chart shows Hell Gate in 1851, which is the year that the U.S. The GNIS database serves as the backend of the Historical Map and Chart Collection’s search by location/place name. NOS Hydrographic Survey Data NOAA's hydrographic surveys (H-sheets) are available for search and download through the National Geophysical Data Center. Smooth sheets of surveys are available in SID and TIFF formats. NOAA's Nautical Chart Catalog gives you the ability to view any of NOAA's 1000+ nautical charts, as well as download NOAA's general use charts in three different raster formats: NOAA RNC ® full size nautical charts in PDF format, and BookletCharts™. Select a region to access the Nautical Chart Catalog NOAA ENCs (ENC): Vector files of chart features and available in S-57 format. NOAA ENCs support marine navigation by providing the official Electronic Navigational Chart used in ECDIS and in electronic charting systems. NOAA ENCs are updated weekly with Notice to Mariner corrections.
